Dancing Lights

6 January – 1 February, 2024

Banana Hill Art Gallery is honored to host the remarkable artistic voyage of Edison Mugalu, a self-taught Ugandan expressionist painter whose journey from the vibrant landscapes of Kayunga to the global art stage has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born and raised in the rich cultural tapestry of Kayunga, Mugalu's passion for art germinated in his childhood, where he found inspiration in the vivid hues extracted from flowers by his mother.

In 2003, Mugalu's artistic odyssey took a significant turn when he joined Ngoma Artists Studio in Bukoto. This pivotal moment marked the genesis of his formal exploration into the world of painting, an endeavor that would lead him to discover and develop his unique artistic voice. Fueled by an insatiable curiosity and an innate connection to his roots, Mugalu delved into the world of acrylics, collages, and African fabric, crafting a distinctive style that would become synonymous with his name.

Mugalu's artistic evolution is a testament to the power of self-discovery and the relentless pursuit of one's creative truth. His canvases, adorned with a kaleidoscope of colors, are windows into a world where emotion, culture, and expression converge harmoniously. The use of African fabric in his creations not only adds a tactile dimension to his work but also serves as a homage to his heritage, intertwining traditional elements with contemporary expression.

The impact of Edison Mugalu's art transcends borders, as evidenced by the private collections his works have found homes in, and the numerous solo and group exhibitions that have showcased his talent on the global stage. From the USA to Belgium, Australia to Kenya, South Africa to Tanzania, and Rwanda, Mugalu's art has resonated with audiences, sparking conversations and igniting imaginations across diverse landscapes.
